Every chord, every scale, every melody you've ever played comes down to the same thing: the distance between two notes. That distance is called an interval — and once you understand them, music stops feeling like a pile of disconnected shapes and starts feeling like a system.

What is a music interval on guitar?
A music interval is the distance between two notes, measured in semitones (half steps). On guitar, one fret = one semitone. So if you play E on the open high E string and then play F on the 1st fret, the distance between those two notes is one semitone — also known as a minor 2nd.
Every interval has two parts: a number (second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, octave) and a quality (perfect, major, minor, augmented, diminished). Together those tell you exactly which two notes are involved and how they sound together.
Two notes can interact in two ways:
- Harmonic interval — both notes played at the same time. That's how chords are built.
- Melodic interval — both notes played one after the other. That's how melodies are built.
Same intervals, different use. Stack them vertically and you get harmony. Play them in sequence and you get melody.
How music intervals work on guitar
There are 12 unique notes in Western music, which means there are 12 unique interval distances (from a unison up to an octave). On guitar, every one of those 12 distances has a name. Here's the full set, measured in frets on a single string:
- 0 frets — Unison (same note)
- 1 fret — Minor 2nd (half step) — sharp dissonance
- 2 frets — Major 2nd (whole step) — mild dissonance
- 3 frets — Minor 3rd — soft consonance
- 4 frets — Major 3rd — soft consonance
- 5 frets — Perfect 4th — mild consonance
- 6 frets — Tritone (Aug 4 / Dim 5) — ambiguous, restless
- 7 frets — Perfect 5th — open consonance
- 8 frets — Minor 6th — soft consonance
- 9 frets — Major 6th — soft consonance
- 10 frets — Minor 7th — mild dissonance
- 11 frets — Major 7th — sharp dissonance
- 12 frets — Octave — same note, one octave higher
The labels perfect, major, and minor aren't arbitrary. Unisons, 4ths, 5ths, and octaves are called perfect because they sound stable and "neutral" — there's no major or minor version of them. Seconds, thirds, sixths, and sevenths come in major and minor versions, where the minor version is one semitone smaller than the major.
Intervals between the strings on guitar
Beyond playing intervals on a single string, the guitar has built-in intervals between the strings themselves. Knowing those is the secret to chord shapes, scale patterns, and finding notes anywhere on the neck.
In standard tuning, the intervals between adjacent strings are:
- Low E → A — Perfect 4th (5 frets)
- A → D — Perfect 4th (5 frets)
- D → G — Perfect 4th (5 frets)
- G → B — Major 3rd (4 frets)
- B → high E — Perfect 4th (5 frets)
That single quirk — the G-to-B string being tuned to a major third instead of a perfect fourth — is why chord shapes on guitar work the way they do. It's the reason barre chords, CAGED shapes, and standard chord fingerings all fit comfortably under the hand.
Recognize intervals using songs you already know
The fastest way to learn intervals isn't to memorize a chart — it's to link each one to a song. Once your ear knows the first two notes of a familiar tune, you'll recognize that interval anywhere.
- Minor 2nd — "Jaws" main theme
- Major 2nd — "Happy Birthday" (first two notes)
- Minor 3rd — "Smoke on the Water" (riff), Michael Jackson "Bad"
- Major 3rd — "When the Saints Go Marching In"

How to practice music intervals on guitar (4-step plan)
Step 1 — Master half steps and whole steps first
The minor 2nd (1 fret) and major 2nd (2 frets) are the building blocks of every other interval. Play E → F on the high E string, then E → F#. Sit on the difference until you can hear which one's which without looking.
Step 2 — Map intervals on a single string
Pick a string and a root note — say A on the 5th fret of the low E string. Play A, then A + 1 fret (minor 2nd), then A + 2 frets (major 2nd), and so on up to A + 12 (octave). Say the interval name out loud each time. This trains both your eyes and your ears.
Step 3 — Play intervals across two strings
The same interval looks different depending on which two strings you use. A perfect 5th from the low E string lands on the A string, two frets up. A perfect 5th from the G string lands on the B string, but three frets up (because of the major-third tuning quirk). Practice each interval shape across all five string pairs.
Step 4 — Ear-train with the song list
Pick five intervals from the song list above. Listen to the opening two notes of each song. Then try to sing or hum each interval back without the recording. Once the song-to-interval link is locked in, you'll recognize intervals in any tune you hear.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Memorizing interval names without playing them. Intervals are sounds, not vocabulary. If you can't hear the difference between a major 3rd and a perfect 4th, the label doesn't help.
- Ignoring the G-to-B string shift. Most interval shapes are consistent across the neck — except when you cross from the G string to the B string. Adjust by one fret on that pair and the shapes work everywhere.
- Treating perfect 4ths and perfect 5ths as interchangeable. They're closely related (a 4th and a 5th add up to an octave), but they have different functions. The 4th tends to lean forward; the 5th sits solid.
- Skipping the tritone. Beginners often gloss over the tritone (6 frets) because it sounds "weird." It's the most important interval to recognize — it's what makes dominant 7th chords pull toward resolution.
Why music intervals matter
Intervals are the foundation under everything else. They define:
- Scales. A major scale is just a specific pattern of intervals (whole-whole-half-whole-whole-whole-half). A natural minor is a different pattern of the same building blocks.
- Chords. A major triad is a root, a major 3rd, and a perfect 5th stacked on top of each other. A minor triad swaps the major 3rd for a minor 3rd. Every chord type is a unique combination of intervals.
- Melody. Every melodic move from one note to the next is an interval. Songs feel happy, sad, anxious, or triumphant largely because of which intervals they lean on.
