Fixing Phase & Polarity Issues (Mixing & Mastering Simplified – Video Lesson)
Phase and polarity problems are one of the most common reasons drums sound thin, weak, or hollow. If two microphones capture the same sound at slightly different times, the waveforms don’t line up correctly — and parts of your audio begin to cancel each other out.
In this lesson from Mixing & Mastering Simplified, we’ll walk through how to check for these issues in Logic Pro and how to fix them so your mix sounds full, punchy, and balanced.
What phase and polarity actually mean
If you’ve never recorded live drums, the terms can be confusing.
In a real recording, engineers often use:
-
A close mic (e.g., snare top)
-
An overhead mic capturing the whole kit
Both microphones hear the same snare hit, but not at the exact same moment. That timing difference can create phase issues.
Even if you're using samples and not real recordings, this tutorial still demonstrates the idea so you understand how it works in real mixing situations.
Step 1: Flip polarity to test for cancellation
-
Solo the two tracks that represent your “two mics.”
-
Insert the Gain plugin (Audio FX → Utility → Gain).
-
Click the Phase Invert (Ø) buttons.
-
Toggle them on and off while listening.
If flipping the phase suddenly makes the track fuller or punchier, you’ve found a polarity problem.
Step 2: Zoom in and compare the waveforms
Next, look at the visual peaks:
-
Zoom horizontally
-
Zoom vertically
-
Compare where each transient lands
If the peaks point in opposite directions, or one is slightly delayed, that’s a phase issue.
Step 3: Align the timing
If one track is late:
-
Select the late mic
-
Use the Nudge tool (Control + Option + →/←)
-
Adjust in tiny steps until the peaks line up
-
Stop once the waveforms sit neatly together
This instantly tightens your drums and removes that hollow sound.
Fixing phase on specific hits only
Sometimes the issue only occurs on certain hits. Instead of flipping phase on the entire track:
-
Highlight the problem area
-
Go to Functions → Selection-Based Processing
-
Add the Gain plugin
-
Enable Phase Invert
-
Apply
This gives you precise control without affecting the whole performance.
